What to Wear for Your Family Photoshoot
“What should we wear?” is the single most common question I get before any session, and it’s usually the source of the most stress. Here’s how to make it simple.

Start with a Color Palette, Not Matching Outfits
Forget matching head-to-toe. Instead, pick 3–4 complementary colors and let each family member wear a mix of them. Think soft neutrals (cream, sage, dusty blue, camel) layered with one or two accent tones. This creates a cohesive look in photos without anyone looking like they’re in a uniform.
What Works Well
• Solid colors and soft textures: linen, cotton knits, denim
- Layers: a cardigan, light jacket, or scarf adds texture and depth
- Muted, earthy tones. These photograph beautifully outdoors and never date the photos
- One statement piece: a patterned dress or bold shoe, paired with everything else kept simple

What to Avoid
- Busy patterns and logos: they pull focus away from faces
- All-black or all-white outfits for the whole family: they can look flat in photos
- Neon or overly bright colors, they tend to overpower everything else in frame
- Brand-new shoes that pinch, comfort matters more than you’d think for a 60 minute session

For Families with Young Kids
Don’t fight the battle over “matching.” A child in their favorite comfortable outfit will smile more genuinely than one in something itchy or unfamiliar. Comfort always photographs better than perfection.
