How to Prepare for Your In-Home Newborn Photography Session?
Bringing a newborn photographer into your home for the first time can feel a little intimidating. Will the house be clean enough? What should the baby wear? What if the baby cries the entire time? Here’s everything you actually need to know before your in-home newborn session.

You Don’t Need to Deep-Clean Your House
I know the instinct is to scrub every corner before I arrive.
Please don’t stress about this.
I photograph in a way that focuses on you, your baby, and the corners of your home that matter: a favorite reading chair, the nursery you decorated, the bed where you’ll spend those early sleepless nights. A lived-in home tells a more honest story than a spotless one. That said, a few small things help: clearing visible clutter from the main room we’ll use, having fresh sheets on the bed, and making sure the space you’re most proud of (the nursery, the living room) is tidy enough that you feel comfortable in photos there.

What to Have Ready
- Soft, simple outfits for baby: solid colors and light layers photograph best. Avoid busy patterns or characters.
- A going-home outfit or favorite swaddle if it’s meaningful to you.
- Comfortable clothing for parents: soft knits, muted tones, nothing too tight or too baggy.
- Siblings’ outfits, if they’re part of the session: coordinating, not matching, works best.
- A fed, recently-changed baby right before I arrive. A full belly means a calmer, sleepier baby.
What If the Baby Cries?
Babies cry. That’s part of newborn life, and it’s part of the story too. I build extra time into every session specifically for feeding breaks, soothing, and diaper changes. Nothing about a newborn session is rushed. If your baby needs twenty minutes to settle, we take twenty minutes.
Timing Your Session
Most families book between 5 and 14 days after birth, when babies are still sleepy and curl easily into those soft newborn poses. That said, lifestyle newborn photography works beautifully even later, I’ve photographed babies at three and four weeks with equally beautiful results, since we’re documenting real life, not chasing a specific “newborn look.”

The Day Of
Plan for 60 minutes. I’ll guide you through everything: where to sit, how to hold your baby, what to do with your hands. You never need to pose perfectly. My job is to make you comfortable enough that the real moments show up on their own.
